How did the Saratoga glasses become legendary?

The History of American Optical’s Saratoga Glasses

Sometimes, a classic object worn by a legendary figure takes on an aura of its own. This is exactly the case with American Optical’s Saratoga glasses, made mythical by the man who wore them like no other: John F. Kennedy.

At the time of JFK, American Optical was based in Southbridge, Massachusetts. Kennedy, himself a native of the state, had been a loyal wearer of American Optical glasses for many years. Local residents still remember his visits to Southbridge during his election campaigns. He wore both AO sunglasses and the brand’s famous Executive Bifocals prescription glasses.

JFK was often seen wearing the Saratoga during his outings at sea, embodying the “Camelot” image that so captivated the American public. The model instantly established itself as a true classic.

A Very Real Legacy

Iconic photographs are not the only evidence of the bond between Kennedy and American Optical. In 1963, the brand received an official letter requesting glasses for the president’s children. A poignant detail in history: the letter arrived on the very day of his assassination.

Even today, a pair of AO glasses worn by JFK is on display at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum in Boston. Although the name “Saratoga” was adopted later, “American Optical” can still be seen printed on the temple. The model is distinguished by its classic shape, silver metal details, and slimmer temples than those of the Wayfarer style, with which it is often confused.

A Legend That Stands the Test of Time

The popularity of the Saratoga did not fade with JFK. Even after production ceased, the model continued to captivate, earning true cult status over the decades.

In 2020, this legendary model was finally brought back to life. The Saratoga was reissued in absolute respect of the original specifications—offering a new opportunity, even today, to wear an authentic piece of history.
