Which glasses did Malcolm X wear?
Close your eyes for a moment, and you can probably picture every detail of Malcolm X’s iconic style. The dark suit, the slim tie, and above all those browline glasses—nothing was left to chance. His appearance was an integral part of his message, carefully crafted and instantly recognizable.
So, which glasses did Malcolm X wear? He wore the American Optical Sirmont so consistently that the model is now often simply referred to as the “Malcolm X glasses.” Originally launched in the 1950s, this design has never lost its modern appeal.
It is in this spirit that American Optical (AO Eyewear) is proud to bring the Sirmont back to life— a true icon of style, character, and history.

The Style of Malcolm X
The dark suit, understated tie, and bold browline glasses became Malcolm X’s visual signature. Far from incidental, this silhouette embodied his commitment to civil rights. Loyal to American Optical, he matched his Sirmont glasses with his suits and ties, turning style into a true tool of expression.
Why Did Malcolm X Wear Glasses?
Of course, he needed them to see. But beyond their practical purpose, glasses were an integral part of his image. With Malcolm X, style and message were one and the same. His attachment to American Optical’s Sirmont glasses—now often referred to as the “Malcolm X glasses”—helped shape a strong, recognizable identity imbued with authority.

What Is a Browline Frame? Browline glasses have been worn by many political figures for the natural authority they convey. But what does the term browline actually mean?
With this type of frame, the upper part—the brow line—is noticeably thicker than the lower part. Traditionally, this upper line is made of acetate, while the lower part of the frame and the bridge are crafted in metal. This design enjoyed immense popularity in the 1950s and 1960s and has never truly disappeared from the fashion landscape since.
Browline glasses suit many face shapes, as they draw attention upward toward the eyebrows. They are particularly flattering on oval or slender faces, as the browline visually adds width to the face at that level.

Even after production ceased, the Sirmont remained highly sought after, carried by the enduring aura of Malcolm X’s iconic style. In response to this enthusiasm, American Optical worked with passion to bring the Sirmont back to life—this time as a sunglass version.
The original blueprints were carefully retrieved from the archives to faithfully recreate the model in strict accordance with its historical specifications. The fit was then subtly updated to suit modern face shapes, without ever compromising the original design. Iconic details—such as the signature ornament and the fluted bridge—remain true to the original frame.
